Hoodia works by tricking your brain’s “full” signal.  Deep within your brain— in the midbrain— lies a tiny but important organ: the hypothalamus. Nerve cells here sense your blood glucose sugar levels. When you eat, your blood sugar goes up and this in turn triggers those nerve cells in your hypothalamus to send out signals that let you know when you’re full. Hoodia (pronounced HOO-dee-ah) is a cactus-like plant that grows primarily in the semi-deserts of South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, and Angola.  Much of hoodia's popularity stems from claims that the San Bushmen of the Kalahari desert relied on hoodia for thousands of years to ward off hunger and thirst during long hunting trips.
